Farmers are sick and tired of unfair supermarket buying practices!

Some things never change.

In the latest battle between farmers and supermarkets, a group of dedicated farmers have decided to blockade several supermarkets over unscrupulous buying practices. Supermarkets have been doing this for years but contrary to previous occasions, they are now doubling up by paying farmers less whilst at the same time charging consumers more. Ultimately, these supermarkets have share holders to satisfy and prioritize, over offering good value for money to consumers or offering fair prices to producers. That is the true nature of these businesses.

In a recent article in the UK publication Farmers Weekly, Mr Philip Weston, a fifth generation farmer was quoted as saying

“Whilst the farm inheritance tax fiasco has taken the limelight, farmers are in a period where input costs are extremely high but the prices we’re getting are extremely low.

“At the same time, supermarkets are making record profits and their bosses are rewarding themselves huge bonuses."

Not only this but these "great" supermarkets are also prioritizing cheap imports produced at much lower welfare standards compared to our locally produced products. So essentially, British consumers are paying more for poorer quality products, whilst at the same time detracting from the national economy. Does this not suggest that the only people profiting from the existence of these large supermarket chains are indeed the shareholders and bonus fat cats; yes! Excellent!

Sadly, most consumers are unwilling to ditch convenience in place of equality and quality and so the cycle continues. With all the modern time constraints, it's not difficult to see why this is the case. If only there existed a British supermarket that was willing to pay farmers a fair price, for a good product and that wasn't run for profit.
